The principles behind auspicious naming
DekDuangDee curates names using the Thaksa-Pakorn system — the same framework Thai families have used for centuries to choose auspicious consonants and avoid kalakini (inauspicious) letters based on day of birth. This page explains what that is and how we work.
What is Thaksa-Pakorn?
Thaksa-Pakorn is an 8-position wheel that assigns every Thai consonant to one of eight categories: Boriwan (servants), Ayu (longevity), Dech (power), Sri (honour), Mula (wealth), Utsaha (diligence), Montri (patron), and Kalakini (misfortune). Your day of birth rotates the wheel, putting a different group of letters in each position. The kalakini position is the one to avoid.

What are kalakini letters?
Kalakini letters are the consonants (and in some cases vowels and tone marks) that fall into the 8th position for a given birthday. Tradition holds that names containing these letters bring difficulty; they should be avoided. This site uses the same rule set as the DekDuangDee iOS app — consistent with standard Thai references.
Firstname vs nickname — different rules
In Thai culture every child has two names: a firstname (the formal, registered name) — which must follow Thaksa-Pakorn and avoid kalakini letters for that day of birth — and a nickname (chêu-lên, the name used in daily life) — which has no astrological constraint at all and can be anything. So on this site, the day-of-birth directory pages show firstnames only; nicknames are browsable freely in the swipe game regardless of your baby's birth day.
How we curate
Our team curates names from a range of Thai sources — classical texts, dictionaries, contemporary naming statistics, and linguistic expert input. Every name is reviewed for meaning, pronunciation, and contemporary feel — not just by algorithm. Curation is slow because every name should be one worth choosing.
How we choose profiles to publish
We begin with names that have evidence of real use and complete reviewed data for meaning, pronunciation, gender, and birth-day compatibility. Usage signals help prioritise our editorial work internally; the site does not present them as counts or an official Thai popularity ranking because popularity varies by generation, region, and spelling.
